Don’ts
- Do not get overwhelmed by the “one page resume” rule; you will just get frustrated. It’s good to keep your resume to consume only one page, but if you have lots of experiences and things to share in this document, then go ahead! However, if your resume goes beyond the first page but consumes only a little space on the second page, try to minimize your words or condense your thoughts on the details by making it only one page. This is a lot easier.
- Do not use justified text blocks. This format actually put little spaces between your words and makes it more spacious. Instead, use the left alignment.
- Don’t ever lie on your resume.
- Don’t discount the possibility of a functional format for your resume. Functional resume is organized around functional skills clusters. After listing three to four skills clusters and showing how you’ve demonstrated those skills, you provide a bare-bones work history at the bottom. If your resume does not seem to be very sophisticated as far as your details are concerned, use the general type of resume only.
- Don’t use personal pronouns in a resume. I, my, and me words are not considered ethical in terms of how to write resume.
- Don’t leave out the locations of your past jobs, in both city and state. Most applicants seem to omit this information, but you have to include this at all.
- Don’t list too much experience on your resume. Basic rules in resume writing take only the list about 15 years worth of jobs. Besides, if you add so many experiences, the employer might think you’re too expensive and might not consider you instead.

- Do consider bulleted-style in making your resume. It’s the easiest way to read it and it’s considered systematic.

There’s nothing wrong with it, but if you could be more creative in making resumes, then take that idea as soon as possible.
- Do include as much as contact information as possible. Email address, phone and landline numbers, and even home and mailing addresses are very important for your employer to reach you when he needs to contact you.
