If you aren’t getting the right reaction to your resume, it’s time to move beyond traditional tactics to market yourself. In this article, I share three marketing secrets to turbo-charge any job search.
Secret #1: Know Your Unique Value Proposition
Having coached many people in a job transition, I know that most are tempted to load their resume up with everything they’ve ever done. The thinking is, you share more, and the more you share, the more they like you. But put yourself in the place of your potential employer. They’re swimming in alligators they want you (the potential employee) to come in and manage or they dream of more sales because you. Or your future boss is trying to figure out how to look better for his bosses.
With that in mind, make sure your resume speaks to the alligators you can help them solve, the business you can bring in, or how you can make your boss look great. Does your resume communicate that or are you still on the “more is better” kick? Get crystal clear on your resume so it speaks to what they care about. Use solution language they can relate to.
As you rewrite your resume, stay anchored to what you do best, your unique gifts and talents, or the tasks where you shine the most. You doing what you do best is an unstoppable force of nature that any potential employer would pay top dollar for. Stay anchored to what you do best while rewriting your resume to speak to the needs of the employer.
Secret #2: Build Relationships Daily
Your social network may be an untapped gold mine. If you treat it well, it will treat you well. Your social network will give you the inside track on unadvertised job openings, provide invaluable references, or at least you in the right direction. Grow and nurture relationships each day. There are no marketing gimmicks that can make up for a weak social network.
What if you’ve neglected your social network? Or have few references you can use? Start today. Get out of your world and into their world. See the world from their eyes. Meet their needs. Manage their expectations. And you’ll see it coming back to you in a positive way.
We live a world where Facebook-like websites connect a lot of people. Use these website, but grow your social network with more personal tactics. Pick up the phone. Send them a personal greeting card. Enhance relationships made available through electronic media with a combination of more personal approaches.
Secret #3: Become Tastefully Bold
With a clear idea of what we bring to a potential employer, are growing the health of our network, self promotion moves to the next level when you use bold tactics without overdoing them. Here are some examples to stir your thinking.
Live in marketing. Marketers know that when you place a product with a consumer, they usually grow to like it and decide to keep it. Why not offer your services for free for a period of time? Let them see you in action while you build relationships with them. A word of caution: Be clear about what you will deliver in the time frame you’re offering. Remember, relationships get built when needs and expectations are met. Manage those expectations. And deliver.
You.com. A personal website about you, your skills, your accomplishments can help you stand out from the crowd. A word of caution: Don’t look like you created the website to launch a consulting business. Companies want to know that you’ll be happy with them so keep that in mind as you create your personal website.

The enhancements to the VIP Partner Program are based on feedback received from current partners and are designed to enrich the D-Link business experience, making it seamless and rewarding. The updates are centered on VIP Level Requirements, the Volume Incentive Rebate (VIR) Program, enhancing the existing Deal Registration program to offer front-end discounts, and new program additions such as a D-Link GovEd Discount Program, and Technology Specializations.
“We were looking for a channel partner that would deliver high-performance networking solutions at competitive prices, complete with the technical support often required in extensive implementations, and D-Link fit the bill,” said Kevin Dowdy, vice president, Beacon Solutions, a Louisville, Ky., solutions provider. “We were considering a higher priced competitor, but after talking with D-Link, we rolled out an innovative wireless infrastructure into a national hotel chain, and have since implemented D-Link wireless solutions into three hotels with a fourth in process.”

Partners who enroll in the program automatically become Registered partners and will have access to restricted D-Link information and resources. Registered partners enjoy significant benefits including a very rich Deal Registration program, eligibility for special pricing on competitive bids, access to the online Partner Portal and training center, and access to exclusive promotions and discounts, including the D-Link Rewards points program. - Silver Level
Silver-level partners demonstrate a solid understanding of D-Link’s Switching and Wireless products, and D-Link works closely with these partners to deliver best-in-class solutions. These partners receive all Registered benefits, plus earn a quarterly VIR up to 7 percent, are eligible for sales leads, can attend a quarterly product roadmap briefing, and are eligible for a unique Bounty Program that pays a rebate when a Registered Deal does not come to fruition. - Gold Level
D-Link Gold partners are the most highly trained and certified partners on Wireless and Switching products, capable of delivering complex D-Link solutions and are fully engaged with D-Link to ensure customer satisfaction. Technology Specializations

Partners with technology specializations will receive priority access to leads and 5 percent upfront discounts on products in their specialization category, as well as special branding as a technology “preferred” partner.

Deal Registration
D-Link’s existing Deal Registration program is being enhanced to move the discount to the front-end, making the discount more immediate. Further, the actual discount amounts are enhanced so that all VIP partners qualify for the same discount amounts, which will be tiered based on deal size; 6 percent off MSRP discounts for deals between $5,000 and $20,000; and 10 percent off MSRP discounts for deals over $20,000.
GovEd Discount Program
