Personal Details
Personal details should be restricted to those that are completely vital. Most recruiters expect to see your nationality and date of birth but you can choose to leave these out if you think they may go against you.
Other personal details such as number of dependents, driving license and marital status can be integrated if it is not going to make your CV too long by including them.
These can help companies to get a rounded picture of the individual they are going to interview. Do not include names and ages of children or name of spouse. The company is not interested at this stage.
Profile
This is an introductory statement about who you are and what you have to offer. You should complete this last although it is positioned prominently in the CV, possibly in the Focal Point.
It should be no more than two sentences and include the most vital facts about you. Including expertise, successes, responsibility or personal characteristics.
‘Highly driven Food Production Manager with successful motivational skills and experience in the chilled food industry.’
Employment History
Always start with your most recent employment. Break down your job capabilities as much as possible. List key achievements with lots of juicy facts and figures, they will impress and will be a talking point through an interview. You should have more to say about your most recent, and therefore most pertinent, employment.
Include successes and triumphs especially if it saved the business money.
Qualifications
Qualification should be defined in terms of selling yourself to the employer. Include all relevant courses, dates passed and name of school or college. But, leave out poor grades and failures. These will not help you get invited for interview.
If you have a university degree you can leave out all of your lower qualifications. Mature applicants may want to leave out ‘Education’ altogether, as your career history and skills are probably more important.
Skills
abilities can be referred to under three headings: Technical Skills, Professional Courses and Additional Skills. Technical skills are those related to a technical, mechanical or engineering job.
You need to checklist your abilities and how recently you have used them e.g. HACCP for food Production jobs when applying for food management jobs in the UK. Professional Courses are those that you have attended specifically for a particular job.
Additional skills are anything else that may be relevant e.g. languages, keyboard skills, lean manufacturing.
Interests
Only include interests that are unusual or which indicate transferable skills, achievements or responsibilities.

The format of a good resume is simple, but how you use the different sections on your resume to highlight your worthiness for the given job is the key to land that dream job. To help you out, here are some of the best things to say on a resume:
Start With A Clear-Cut Objective
Don’t drag your objective - limit to only 1-2 sentences and be succinct. You don’t have to say how you’re going to cut down costs by 70% and boost sales by 120%.
Simply state what you can do, maybe something like this - Obtain a position where over X years of experience in [your field of expertise] will add value to business operations while meeting new challenges to broaden personal horizons.
With a clear-cut objective, you’re stating a give - what the company will get from your years of experience - and a take - what you’ll gain by working on new challenges. This give-take strategy makes you human, not some saint who’s going to sacrifice everything for the good of the company. Obviously you’ll want something back. After all, money’s not everything.
Include A Summary Of Qualifications

Therefore, your best chances of attracting the recruiter is by summarizing your qualifications and skills right at the top of your resume.
Again, keep a clear-cut approach here as well. Don’t beat around the bushes. And no bold claims either. For best exposure, stick to a bullet style format in this section.
Start with your number of years in the field of expertise related to the proposed job position. If you’re new to that particular field of expertise, then skip this part and highlight your qualifications related to the position instead.

How Do Resumes Differ From Country to Country?

Just how important is having a country-specific resume to your chances of getting employed? Can the resume that got you a job in the UK be used for the Australian job market? Do you really have to design a new resume depending on the country?
The answer is simple. Just as every resume and cover letter you write needs to be targeted and focused toward the company you are applying for, the same concept is applied toward the job market you are applying for. Different countries expect and require certain information to be present on resumes, and therefore it is critical that your new resume meets the unique requirements of that country. Just because one country requires including personal details such as marital status or date of birth does not mean this standard applies to others. Not only can this be seen as inappropriate, it can also possible be illegal, and your resume will be deleted before it has even been read!
European requirements
Recently in Europe, the rules for resume writing changed substantially. As part of the European Union (EU), all members follow the same resume criteria and format. The Europass CV was created to “provide citizens with the opportunity to present in clear and comprehensive way information on their qualifications and competences”.
This is a fantastic idea for people applying for roles in Europe as there is a standard template to complete that avoids issues such as cultural differences and different requirements between the countries. While this may be good for a French national applying for a role in Belgium, the rules change when applying to countries such as the USA, Australia or Asia. It is typical to see information such as nationality, date of birth and gender on European and Asian resumes.
In South Africa it is even required to have even further personal information such as ID number and ethnicity (the latter to clarify one’s BEE or affirmative action status).
In Australia and the US, however, stricter privacy laws make this personal information unnecessary. In the US, an employer has no legal right to know your age. (They do have a right, however, to ask your age only if local, state, or federal law requires that employees be over a certain age.)
USA differences
In today’s society the terms “CV” and “resume” are often used interchangeably. Take note, however, if you are applying for a job in the USA, as there are major differences between a “resume” and a “CV”. An American Curriculum Vitae (CV) is NOT the same as a CV from countries around the world. What countries outside of the USA know as a “Curriculum Vitae” (or “CV”) is called also called a “resume” in the US. A “Curriculum Vitae” in America is not a resume - it is a longer document and is usually written only by a researcher, educator, or academic.
Thinking of including a picture?
When it comes to putting a picture on your resume, different countries have different approaches. In the UK you would never attach a photo, whereas in Germany or France you would. Many Asian countries also include pictures with their applications. In the US and Australia it is not recommended or encouraged. My personal opinion is to leave your picture off your resume. The most important aspect of your resume is the content and it’s vital to ensure that the reader of your resume is more interested in your skills than what you look like.
With all the differences between resumes around the world, it’s important that you do your research into the country before submitting your resume. A professional resume writer can often help you with the “dos” and “do nots” of resume writing in a certain country, and he or she can also provide assistance with resume format, structure and presentation.
With any resume (no matter where you are applying in the world), focus your content on achievements and value-added duties you have performed. At the end of the day, the employer wants to know how you can add value and what skills, experience and expertise you can bring to the business.
And finally, never embellish or fabricate achievements or qualifications. These will often be exposed sooner or later and can result in dismissal, expulsion or even criminal prosecution in those countries with punitive legal codes.

When submitting your application form or resume to a company, the only thing that makes you different from the other applicants is your cover letter. A great letter will explain why you are worth considering further for the job vacancy.
You might think that taking the time and effort to create your own letter sounds difficult or might be time consuming. There are many places online that have template letters which you can download. There are companies that you can pay to write the letter for you. There is even software to download, at a price, which will help you set out your letter.
Before you go ahead with any of these methods let me list the advantages and disadvantages:
Advantages
Standard templates are typed out with gaps for you to fill in such as ‘job title’, ‘key responsibility or achievement’, ‘key skills’, ‘current employer’. These don’t take long to fill in.
Paying someone to write your letter for you seems an easy option. If you visit some of these websites you will see that you have to fill in your skills, experience, key abilities etc. The company will write the letter for you and email it on. This process can take a few days, depending on the company you use.
Buying software is similar to the template process. Once you have the software you fill in the gaps and then print your letter out.
Disadvantages
Although the above methods would seem to save you time, you can probably see that you will need to make a list of your skills and qualifications. This is something you would do if you were writing your own cover letter - so would you actually save any time?
Paying someone to write your letter seems straightforward but you are paying someone who doesn’t know you and may present you with a covering letter that sounds nothing like you. (This once happened to me, I wasn’t happy with the results at all.)
Paying for software could be a false economy if you are only going to write one letter. You could use your money on a new interview outfit instead - or a celebration present for yourself when you get the job.
The employer may have already received the same template letter from another candidate. What would that tell the employer about you?
Conclusion
Writing your own letter isn’t difficult. It gives you time to work out your strongest abilities and to present them to the employer. Nobody knows you like you do. You are the perfect person to write your own perfect cover letter.

Don’t assume that by listing your degree and school, you are finished - far from it! You are selling yourself and your education short by not utilizing essential job skills you earned during your time in school.
Besides, preparing your resume now is a great way to combat senioritis because it mentally puts you beyond graduation and into the real world, when you actually get to start using what you have worked so hard to achieve! Here are some important ways to maximize your education to make your resume more appealing to employers:
1. If your degree is easily transferable into a specific position (i.e. many accounting, engineering, and education majors), you can list your degree right in your resume’s introduction (“Recent honors graduate in accounting…”). This lets them know your education is current, cutting-edge, and directly applies to what you will be doing. You would also want to list your degree in your Education section with other academic credentials (i.e. honors you received, GPA if above 3.5, and organizational memberships related to your field).
2. If you are going into a field different than your degree (i.e. many Psychology, Sociology, and English majors), you will want to list your degree in the Education section, but perhaps listed with applicable related classes, internships, or research papers you completed. For example, if you where a Political Science major and you want to be in sales, you could list any public debates you participated in, internships where you presented persuasive content to audiences, or even related business classes. Again, don’t forget to disclose honors and relevant organizational memberships.
3. This is where internships pay off! Unless you are an M.B.A. student with 15 years of experience already, you should present your paid and unpaid internships as if they were actual jobs. List your title - “Lab Assistant”, “Design Intern”, etc. - as well as company, location and dates of work, brief overview of responsibilities, and notable accomplishments. Show them you did more in college than sleep and study!
4. Analyze your extra value-added skills. These are those seemingly minor experiences you had along the way that may apply to your prospective jobs, including computer software/hardware, certifications, or other special skills that are present in many job descriptions you’re targeting.
