The question now is how do you overcome the issue, now that you know that many positions for which you respond to may not be fully explained? Without some more qualifying information, you really may not know how to respond in a way that will get the attention of a hiring manager. After all at this point, you want a positive response to have the opportunity to explain your abilities and learn more about the position, company, and the person for whom you might be working. In other words, you want an interview, but you cannot get an interview or even have an opportunity for one if you cannot get acknowledged one way or the other.

That is a real problem. Is it not? It is really frustrating not to be acknowledged. We are all used to being acknowledged in all areas of their lives. In your previous job, you were acknowledged by a lot of different people. At home, you are acknowledged. Yet, when you send a resume and cover letter that you have poured over, or paid to have created; you expect to at least to be acknowledged even if it is a negative response.

There are a number of skills that you need to acquire and actions that you need to take to change this situation for the better. Would you not rather have a response even if it is a negative one instead of no response at all? Would you not rather have the opportunity to participate in that response, giving you a fighting chance at an opportunity? I would be surprised if anyone said no thank you.

The first skill that has to be acquired is to determine what companies to contact and how to reach out to them. The only way to do that is to accurately and honestly determine what your skills, accomplishments, and experiences are that make you valuable to an employer.

Next, gain the skill to conduct research on companies in the industry you have come from and determine other industries where your skills, accomplishments, and experiences may apply. This research will provide you with the companies you want to determine if they are hiring in the areas you fit. You want to determine if they are companies for which you want to work.

The only way to learn about these companies is to pick up the telephone and call them. That requires learned skills, so you are at ease talking with individuals within a company and hiring managers. Those skills will allow you to learn how to gain the information you seek.

The other result of these contacting companies is you will engage people. They will acknowledge you, because you are talking with them directly on the telephone; not sending paper into a black hole. You will find many of the companies you call are either not hiring for areas you qualify or find out you do not want to work for a company for many reasons. That is all good information as you can stop wasting your time with them and place it where it is more productive, on those companies that engage with you.

• How is the company doing in their industry
• Are they growing
• What areas are needing skilled people like yourself
• What problems or opportunities are they working on where you could be of help
• What other specific needs does the hiring manager possess where you would bring value

This is valuable information. Now, consider what you want to respond back to the hiring manager with your credential information. Because companies and hiring managers are conditioned to ask for and work with resumes; you should be prepared to provide a resume. With the information you have gained, you know how it should read to highlight the skills, experience, and accomplishments you have that will be helpful to the hiring manager.

The other, more valuable information that needs presented is a document to show the needs, problems, and opportunities and how you possess the solution. It would take many pages to fully explain this matrix to go along with your resume. Let’s just say that it is a success tool we have used for a combined total of 50 years. It is a more powerful tool in recent years, due to the issues hiring managers and job seekers have at this time.

Take the time to gain the skills you need that will:
• Allow you to identify your skills, experience, and accomplishments
• Permit you to productively research industries for companies that are a potential match
• Teach you how to find the people you really want to engage with and will engage with you
• Instruct you how to talk with those you come in contact with productively and at ease
• Teach you how to take what is learned and provide it to the hiring manager in a compelling manner with your skills, accomplishments and experiences
• Help you with proper follow through to reach a point of interview

These skills create proactive participation in a job search rather that a passive role of sending a resume for a generic job description and a cover letter to some unknown individual, with the almost sure expectation of no response or at best a negative response.

You want the opportunity for a sustainable job. You want to be able to be acknowledged even if it is a negative response, but from a real person and you’ll know that you put your best effort forward. You want the opportunity to engage with hiring managers, knowing that some will want to interview you…a situation you created. You have not simply rolled the dice and hoped for a good outcome.

The cover letter is the expected norm when applying for a job. Traditionally, it should be four paragraphs explaining - as briefly as possible- who you are and how you heard of the opening, how your qualifications would benefit the company, why you say you would fit into that company and finally contact details, attachments and other nitty-gritty. Best advice that we could find on the net to “make your cover letter stand out” was to be yourself while taking time to c-r-a-f-t your writing but advertise yourself - and don’t come across as boring, but don’t repeat your CV. Oh - and don’t forget to have one format for when you’re sending out a CV traditionally, and a different one for when you’re applying online.

How much of the first paragraph did you skip? Come on - be honest.

What if that was someone’s cover letter that you were reading? Just the format, of 6-7 lines clumped together turns you into the speed-reader that you didn’t know you were!

Which brings us to the question of originality. How many times have YOU copied and pasted a sample from the internet, changed around a few words and lines and then beamed proudly at your “professional cover letter”?

  • You have critical thinking skills.
  • You have excellent communication skills.
  • You manage your time constructively.
  • You have problem solving skills.

And most of these are essential soft skills that can turn any job-hunter into an employee because - let’s face it - you can’t really list all your soft skills on your CV or cover letter. Changing the way you look on paper, can speak volumes in your physical absence.

Don’t let your potential employer speed read your resume.

Have you recently applied for a job where you read the job posting and you said to yourself, this sounds like me. I have done exactly what they desire and done it well. This should be like shooting fish in a barrel. After you sent your polished resume and refined cover letter; did you either received the polite email, letter, or worse, no response? It is very discouraging and maybe it even made you angry that the individuals reviewing the resumes must not have looked at yours. In the worst case scenario, they did not read it correctly. The prevailing thought is, why did they not see that I am qualified?

This has been a common occurrence among job seekers for a couple years. On the other side of the coin, employers are very frustrated they cannot find qualified people for their positions. Seems like a bit of a conundrum does it not?

There is a very good reason for this situation. First, it is not you. You did nothing wrong in answering the job posting. Based on what you read, you may very well be qualified for the position. The operative words here are “based on what you read.” There is a real problem with job postings. There always has been, but now job postings are not helping job seekers or employers. Let’s point out some facts that have created much of this situation.

Consider what has happened to companies over the last 5-8 years. Most have down-sized, right-sized, re-engineered or some other term that means they are doing more with fewer people. The reasons do not matter, the fact that this has occurred is what matters.

Let’s say that a department in an organization has gone from 15 people down to 6. The duties and responsibilities have not lessened just because fewer people are handing the area. If anything, they have taken on more work. So what happens to all the duties and responsibilities of those no longer there? Of course, the remaining employees take on the duties and responsibilities in addition to their own. What does all this mean?

What does this mean for the hiring manager and how does that affect your efforts. Let’s say 10 years ago, there was a position open for a Maintenance Engineer with Company A. The description for it was pretty much like the description for it in other companies in that particular industry, Company B, Company C, etc. Coming forward, several years, when the reductions happened Company A Maintenance Engineer has picked up additional duties that are different from those picked up in the other similar companies with similar positions.

What happened next? When the Maintenance Engineer left Company A, and Company A posted a job opening, they most likely did not take into account all the organically developed duties that had been added to that position.

On the surface, that may not seem like a big issue. However, when the resumes start coming in and they pass through the screening system to the hiring manager, now it is an issue. The resumes he looks at do not possess the skills and experiences he needs for all those other responsibilities that were handed down to the last engineer. So, he rejects them all. The job seekers cannot figure out why they did not get a call or why they received an email telling them they were not the right fit for the position.

Sound unlikely? Talk to a few hiring managers and ask if this has not happened to them frequently. When we help them analyze exactly what they were looking and the qualifications for positions, it becomes apparent not many people really possess all those qualifications. More than ever, each position is becoming more customized.

We talk to hiring managers every day. They frequently tell us they cannot find qualified people for their organization. Once we illustrate for them what has become so unique about the position for which they are searching for a qualified candidate, they understand.

So what is the answer? How do you as a job seeker overcome this hurdle? There is a way. We will talk about it in the next part of this article.
